Lomandra species are hardy clump‑forming plants with strappy leaves, valued for their texture and adaptability. They combine beautifully with flowering shrubs and other grasses.
Design ideas
- Contrast with shrubs: Plant Lomandra beneath taller shrubs like bottlebrush or grevillea to soften their bases and provide year‑round foliage interest.
- Mass plantings: Use in swathes along paths or on slopes to stabilise soil and create uniform texture.
- Companion planting: Combine Lomandra with Dianella for varied heights and leaf colours; Lomandra forms the backbone while Dianella adds blue or variegated hues. Add some taller shrubbery for synergistic root erosion control and biodiversity support. Add a rambling groundcover to plug gaps, suppress weeds once fully established, and act as a living mulch.

Care considerations
Lomandras tend to love full sun, but many of them will tolerate quite a bit of shade; some will thrive with just 2 hours’ direct sunlight or dappled shade. That makes them perfect for planting nearby tubestock trees that will eventually provide shade. Lomandra tolerates a range of soils, including sandy and clay types, with some even thriving in wet feet with root rot diseases. Water regularly during establishment; thereafter, most varieties require minimal irrigation. Cut back old foliage every few years 100mm above the ground to rejuvenate.
